Though the 55-year-old plot's bones are sturdy and its new performers gifted, moviegoers hoping for a mercilessly funny post-Weinstein revenge fantasy (its poster declares: "They're giving dirty rotten men a run for their money") will walk away feeling conned. Penny’s schemes have been far more low-key with lower stakes, but when she sees the extraordinary wealth Josephine is enjoying, she insists on staying and learning from the master.
Maybe that would've been something to justify returning for a third take on a premise that, back in 1988, was already charmingly and self-consciously antiquated. Wilson's Penny Rust is a two-bit grifter, catfishing dudes online and roping them into funding medical procedures for a hot "sister" whose image she probably swiped from Instagram. EMAIL ME If not, it’s off to the next poor schlub. Unlike an “Ocean’s” movie, for example, the steadily building thrill of watching an audacious plan come together piece by piece is not the point. It is the kind of movie you watch on an airplane—perhaps on the way to someplace luxurious and relaxing like the South of France, the film’s setting—while falling in and out of naps. It’s not terrible. One suspects that Wilson, a producer on the film who has written much of her material in the past, plugged several of these put-downs in well after the pic was underway. Those who know Scoundrels can plot out the scenes to come, in which Josephine agrees to teach Penny the art of the high-class con, and they may be happier with their imagined version of the update.
Not Now. Both women put Thomas in their sights, but are surprised to find him totally lacking the lust and egotism that have made their other marks so easy to manipulate. We are dropped into the middle of a scam as the ladies are approaching their latest target with whatever ridiculous costume, accent or backstory they’ve cooked up off-screen. It’s funny, but it also makes zero sense. Nowhere is this truer than in the training montage, as Josephine puts Penny through the paces as if she were preparing her for a future as a Navy SEAL. “The Hustle” does some of that — it pushes no buttons and tests no boundaries — but in the service of a higher cause. But it’s a superficial point, and seemingly more of a chance for costume designer Emma Fryer to dress the striking and statuesque Hathaway in an array of gorgeous designs than anything else. And The Hustle, directed by Chris Addison, promises to reimagine the nature of high-stakes swindling by having women (the well-cast Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson) be the fraudsters, exploiting, as Hathaway's character puts it, men's inability to imagine that a woman is cleverer than they are.

And they’re using traditional notions of idealized female sexuality to do it: Josephine as a sultry sexpot, Penny as the worried sister of a buxom blonde who’s allegedly in danger. They’re simply taking what’s theirs, what’s long overdue. Where “The Hustle” falters most is in the way it misses an opportunity to make an actual statement with its gender-flipped premise.

Hathaway and Wilson are certainly game for whatever comes their way—so much so that you’ll wish they’d been afforded the luxury of material with more bite.
