The movie was just one jump-scare set piece after another. I don't think the lady was a red herring, because it's revealed really early on what happened to her and her son. It's also free with an Amazon Prime US sub.

Press J to jump to the feed. The climax of the movie was underwhelming to say the least and my biggest issue with it is that it felt as if they were running low on budget so they decided to replace what could have been the most interesting part of the third act with a jump cut to some time later that basically undercut all of the tension the movie had. 3/5 The clashing of motherly instincts, self preservation, and doubting all of it.

Meh.

In fact, for a PG-13 folk horror, it felt pretty solid. She initially lies to him and herself about it, but eventually speaks the truth of what she knows and fights her fake son to get him to admit he is no longer the boy she knew. Worth watching though. I thought it served the myhology VERY well. I particularly enjoyed the mom's accent. I watched this film last week & just cannot recommend it. The majority of the film does a brilliant job of making you doubt Sarah's reality and sainty, even when she's in Fairyland. She then willingly faces the hole (not sure what this represents right now) to save her son, and enters into a hell filled with imposters who suck the life out of those they replace.

She sees him pretending to be something he's not. Not being able to trust your neighbors, your child, or yourself. Just watched it and thought it was a well executed horror film. And most criminally? It's in there. For what it's worth this is the babadook meets Ted the caver. It was a fun take on a changeling and I dont think the spider scene is gonna leave my mind anytime soon. Thats my opinion anyway.

I also tend to appreciate horror movies that don't rely on jump scares. It's much much more like a mediocre Netflix horror that brings literally not a damn thing new to the genre.

I probably would have preferred that the hole be left as just an ominous presence because the final scenes were such a tone shift from the rest of the film.

Spoiler alert if anyone hasn't seen it, probably stop now. The eventual discovery of what's really going on? I really liked the aesthetics of the massive hole, it looks very otherworldly and menacing, JUST watched this on prime. The movie had some solid creepy moments and I think those of you who like psychological horror will find this worth a watch. Please don't go into this expecting an interesting idea, or batshit crazy shitshow. Not sure if any of this makes sense, or if anyone else saw similar themes, but looking for the deeper message the director/writer/producer might have been trying to get through was part of what made this an enjoyable movie for me. Going in is her way if confronting and changing, about becoming strong and being all they need.

It's a psychological piece, not out and out horror.

To me, the movie was about the horror that can be conformity, especially when you see someone you love changing who they are to the point you no longer recognize them. The direction, cinematography, locations and acting were all great. The Hole In the Ground (2019) - I saw it. I love when films take mythology and fairy tales and set them in modern scenarios. The biggest question I had was how the hell she got out of the hole?!?

It was creepy, but not impressed. Fairies and changelings being real IS the horror, especially given the realistic take and depature from the mythos. If her friend brought him back, why not talk to her or let her know? (This is different from other changeling movies where the primary focus is on figuring out what's happened/convincing people you're not crazy/rescuing the kid.). What I liked most though, was the ability of the movie to keep me guessing as to whether or not it is her child that is an imposter (who is just weird AF) or if she was actually just losing it (signaling with the empty pill bottles). And I loved it. The Hollow for example, is a recent Irish classic. The issues I had were with the script. Since it's an Irish movie I thought those were fairies and the hole in the ground was a fairy ring/circle.

Why did she see herself in it? There were too many similarities to The Monster and Babadook which both did a better job with the mother's guilt idea.

Like you all, I really wanted to love this movie, but instead, I actively disliked it. I thought it was a nice addition to the "Changeling" library.
