athering Blue is a companion novel to The Giver. If this was a community like that in THE GIVER, fine.

I thought it would be in the same world as The Giver but I can't see any similarities.

When looking at it separate, it is a 4 star book. In this book, she has created a Village that is hostile to young children, ranks a person by how many syllables are in their name, and casts out damaged individuals to the Forest. There is no confrontation with Jamison, no confrontation with Vandana, no confrontation about Annabella's/Katrina's/Thomas's & Jo's parents deaths, nothing about the treatment of the special children (Thomas, Kira, and Jo), nothing about how Kira might make changes in the village, nothing about the current Singer, etc. It was interesting, but didn't hold my attention much, especially compared to The Giver. The film took about eighteen years to come together after Bridges struggled to keep hold of the rights, but now that it's here, we're sure the cast and crew are busy celebrating their success and picking out a fine bottle of champagne to toast with.

I'm glad so many people warned me that Gathering Blue doesn't follow Jonas like The Giver did. But book #2 wasn't concerned about telling Jonas's life story or a respite to what might face humankind in the future. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak.

It just feels like lazy writing, which is not what I think of when I think of Lowry's books.

So maybe down the road a little bit, not too far off, maybe I could get excited about it.". "I haven't read Lois' later books.
