In a hypnotic style that is pure, unsentimental noir, Hughes builds tension relentlessly and the fates of Sailor and Sen are played out against the increasing fervour of the town's festivities. Yet, Sailor is the vehicle by which and the lens through which we see all that is imperfect: reflections back his troubled, poverty-ridden childhood and his abusive, alcoholic father to his days in the pool hall and his meeting up with Sen to the key moments in the present of a key and brutal crime that fuels the fire for the story.
