[2] Why the gate arch remained is uncertain. The place-name 'Benwell' is first attested in the Historia de Sancto Cuthberto circa 1050 AD, where it appears as Bynnewalle, from the Old English bionnan walle, meaning "inside the wall". Perhaps the line of the abandoned Vallum, still visible in the landscape, continued to represent a boundary between different jurisdictions, and the gate arch marked its course through the civilian settlement. The Vallum was an addition to the original scheme for Hadrian’s Wall, building of which began in about AD 122. To the south of the fort site, however, is the only causeway (or permanent crossing) of the Vallum earthwork to be seen on the line of Hadrian’s Wall. In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Benwell like this: BENWELL, a township and a chapelry in St. John parish, Northumberland. Pop., 1,771.
