And Thewlis, as a father whose devotion to his daughter compels him to discard his own ethics in a way that, unfortunately, others simply can’t help but notice, is spectacular.
We see Jim’s frustration with Veronica as he lashes out through his work, which can rather affect the future of family food businesses. Taking place in various time periods, its tricky structure more garbled than intriguing, this is another recent Egoyan joint that's basically a trashy potboiler treated with a seriousness that only makes it all both leaden and silly. The secrets in Egoyan’s films involve things that are hidden from family or friends, feelings that are suppressed, intentions that are slowly clarified, long-buried resentments that begin to bear fruit — all gradually revealed through what might be called clues, but which are spun together in a completely absorbing human drama. David Thewlis' performance aside, Guest of Honour serves as a frustratingly limited return to form for writer-director Atom Egoyan. Indeed, the one or two nice shots seem accidental.
Finally, the camerawork and music provide generous hints as to what is going on beneath the surface, guiding the audience when the characters’ reticence leaves their feelings obscure.
