Chasing a gunman through a sea of umbrellas; barren Danish landscapes with just windmills far as the eye can see; a jarring torture scene that is Hitchcock at his most powerful and provocative; an unsuspected action movie climax that could be ripped out of a modern movie; a last scene that’s powerful and just straight up war propaganda. Not my favorite Hitchcock but it does have some memorable scenes : the assassination on the stairs, the hideaway between the umbrella’s, the windmill scène, the plane... a solid first act, a forgettable second act and a tense third act. Foreign Correspondent sits somewhere just below those movies, still very much a masterpiece, still a giddy watch. The narrative is a clunky mess in moving the story between it’s masterful set-pieces, the romance (and leads) are perfunctory, and it goes on a bit too long with all the plot hinges and changes. It lacks the psychological complexities of Hitchcock's best films (including Rebecca), and even though WWII is on the doorstep, it's less pressing a propaganda piece than The Lady Vanishes, for example, apart from the earnest (and pretty terrific) tacked on final scene written by Ben Hecht.
