Here in "eXistenZ", we have instead a very dense and deep meditation on the mystery of reality, of our inability to apprehend where do things come from.

Unfortunately, just as these volunteers begin to plug into the game, a terrorist planted within the audience rushes the stage and proceeds to shoot several people--wounding Allegra and damaging her pod in the process. It is better than the Matrix, by a long shot (I didn't fall asleep in Existenz, for a kick off: action/special effects films bore me stupid, and despite a plausible philosophical gloss, that is exactly what the Matrix is).
Released at around the same time as THE MATRIX and exploring many of the same thoughts and ideas, EXISTENZ is less a crowd-pleaser and more of a low-key thoughtful affair which still manages to be packed with bizarre imagery and grotesque creations from Cronenberg's decidedly warped mind, except this time in a film more appealing to a larger audience than his older grue-fests like THE BROOD.

The first half hour is poor but overall, the film redeems itself and delivers on modest expectations. You might not enjoy this movie if you think the digital world as fake and your identity as a biological life form is real. Please refresh the page and try again. No wonder.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is at her sexiest and coolest here - a charming, fey, untrustworthy heroine; and Jude Law is perfectly cast as the nervous, passive bodyguard reluctantly caught up in her dangerous world. That said, I recommend this movie for those who enjoy futuristic science-fiction films of this sort and have rated it accordingly. Her latest advanced software was named Existenz, probably because it allows the player to have total freedom INSIDE the game! Reviews of the film's Triple Feature Blu-ray indicate that it was presented in 1080i and not the full 1080p the packaging promised. Obvious comparisons to the Matrix or Dark City will take place, but this movie went beyond those in many ways. Jennifer Jason Leigh is the strong-willed and powerful female lead, and her pairing with Jude Law (as the film's "audience" type character, a complete novice who is sucked into the virtual world) is an inspired one, with the two setting it off really well together.
