| Rating: B+ Here is a thriller that isn't necessarily ingenious, influential, or emotionally unforgettable; yet it's thoroughly engaging, well-acted, and visually interesting. The set pieces are all effectively constructed, and the novel comes together in a satisfying climax that builds upon both the scenes of violence and those of creeping dread. 4 Stars Dead Ringers by Christopher Golden was a pleasant surprise and one really cool story. This stemmed from a difference of opinion that I had with someone over Ararat, Golden's most recent novel. Jeremy Irons Beverly’s name may be misleading; both twins are men, and they are unusually close, so much so that they routinely pretend to be each other. Director David Cronenberg handles his usual fondness for gore in muted style. It just went on and on and on so much that I was relieved when it was finally over. i even managed to tell the difference between the brothers even when they tried that no one will tell the difference. While I like "The Brood" quite a bit, Dead Ringers gets my vote as Cronenberg's best work. David Cronenberg is a director of great unique vision, and he ranks highly on my list of favorites, not because every film he does is great per se, but because there is a certain level of consistency and quality that infects each bizarre celluloid mutation he comes up with. The worldly wise yet kittenish performance of Geneviève Bujold is a high point of the film and the story generates a certain twisted interest in the viewer.
The film is always compelling and Jeremy Irons does a great job playing two identical characters who are just a tiny bit slightly different, but it becomes hard to care when we see how contrived everything is in a script that wants them to go nuts for some artificial, lame reason. Clever viewers can usually spot the line - usually hidden in shadow - where one part of the picture ends and the other begins, but Cronenberg uses “moving splits” to fool them. These strangers are almost better and more perfect versions of themselves. One might be able to handle that but when the originals start to lose their substance and their identity to the imposters it starts to get creepy. Bujold is also good as an actress the twins get involved with. Their interest is peaked when they discover that she has a rather unusual uterus and ceaseless libido.

Claire doesn't know that he's twins and that he and his brother ultimately share everything. The secret may be that Cronenberg ( director of “The Dead Zone” and “The Fly”) approaches his trashy material with the objectivity of a scientist; it is his detached, cold style that makes the material creepy instead of simply sensational. So is Cronenberg's complex camera work. Dead Ringers is under mainstream disguise, but don't be wrong, its not mainstream, but its also not horror, or sci-fi. We discover that Elliot has always been the dominant twin, and that it is his practice to seduce a woman and then turn her over to Beverly - without telling the woman, of course.
We learn early in the film how Elliott seduces his clients and once he becomes bored with the women passes them on to Bev, who pretends to be him, sometimes unknowingly to these women. They are miracle workers, enabling formerly barren women to conceive. Dopplegangers, long lost twins, or something far more sinister? Even he is not a personal favourite, he is for me one of the most interesting and unique directors out there, his directing style, his themes and how he explores them and how he manages to get the best out of talented actors. The film was even called "Twins" after the novel until Ivan Rietman bought the naming rights for his film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. They begin sentences that somehow seem to go nowhere, as if it is not quite possible to put into words what this particular relationship means to them. Jeremy Irons effortlessly plays both brothers with full immersion into their duality: the masculine and feminine halves of the human psyche, there cannot be one without the other.
Golden offers an original take on the doppelganger trope, weaving in magic and revenants as well as hinting at otherworldly horrors. It's an okay movie but Cronenberg has done better. A very fine film that challenges and rewards just about equally and somehow has a downbeat ending that manages to be uplifting. They were immensely successful Gynaecologists who lived in New York.

In the meanwhile, like walking along a giant Mobius Strip, we had our realities twisted inside out. I've seen better and I've seen worse (out of Cronenberg). I hardly remember anything from it and yet I remember big chunks of novel, even if I read the novel years before seeing the movie.
Golden's signature characterization shines in this novel and he keeps the suspense perfectly timed and taut. But if that does not drives you away, i strongly recommend. I liked watching the film, and the story is well-told by the director, who specializes in stories like this one to begin with; but I cared more for the seduced, deceived women than I did any of the two twins. I will definitely be reading more books by Christopher Golden.
